New pool of mosquitoes tests positive for Zika virus in Miami Beach

Mosquitoes taken from Zika zone, officials say

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – A new pool of mosquitoes has tested positive for the Zika virus in Miami Beach, Miami-Dade County officials announced on Tuesday.

Officials said the pool of mosquitoes was retrieved Oct. 5 from a trap at 1236 Drexel Ave., which is within the Zika zone designated by the Florida Department of Health.

Inspectors have completed more than 19,000 inspections on Miami Beach and more than 1,000 in Little River.

Officials said Miami-Dade Mosquito Control continues to spray Bti larvicide and adulticide daily in the areas with local transmission.

Miami-Dade residents are asked to drain standing water in an effort to not attract mosquitoes.

Residents are asked to call 311 to report a mosquito nuisance.
