The Florida Department of Health issued the warning after two consecutive samples of beach water exceeded the Federal and State recommended standard for enterococci.

Enterococci can inhabit the intestinal tracts of humans and animals, causing possible disease, infections or rashes.

According to the Department of Health, the prevalence of the bacteria is an indicator of fecal pollution, which may come from storm water run-off, wildlife, pets and human sewage.
