MIAMI – Zika fears are growing in South Florida after another Zika zone was declared this week in Miami.
Local 10 News spoke to Jean and Woodlyne Cherfils, who are expecting their second child and have learned that they live in the new Zika zone.
"We're expecting a baby boy in November," Jean Cherfils said Friday. "It kind of worried me because my wife is pregnant, 35 weeks pregnant, so it is a bit of a concern."
With Woodlyne Cherfils nearing the end of her third trimester, the couple is anxious to welcome their new son, but not too thrilled to learn that people have contracted the virus near their neighborhood.
"(We're) terrified because we don't know what to expect and the effects of the Zika, like, your baby can come out with a deformity," the expecting mother said.
Gov. Rick Scott announced the location of the new Zika zone on Thursday after five people, three of whom live in the area and two others who either work or visited the area, contracted the Zika virus.
The new zone spans from Northwest 79th Street to Northwest 63rd Street, along with Northwest 10th Avenue to the west and North Miami Avenue to the east.
"My concern and everybody's concern (is) it’s a lot of residents in that area," Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado said of the zone that includes parts of Liberty City, Little Haiti and Little River.
The Cherfils said they are now being very cautious before the arrival of their new baby.
"My mosquito repellent and I cover myself with long sleeves and long skirts and pants," Woodlyne Cherfils said. "That's my everything right now."
Miami-Dade County officials said they do not yet have plans for aerial spraying in the area.
