Man faces charges after 'practicing karate' on swans

Swans seem to be OK, officials say

A Florida man was arrested after he allegedly kicked swans and a sleeping duck while practicing karate at a lake, WKMG reported.

Rocco Mantella, 34, is facing a felony charge of aggravated animal cruelty in the incident, which several witnesses reported to police.

One witness said Mantella appeared to be practicing karate in the park. Another said he kicked two swans in the head and another in the backside, police said.

Police said the kicks were "as hard as possible" and enough to cause the swans to fall to the ground, WKMG reported.

Another witness told police she witnessed Mantella intentionally go after a swan and kick the bird in the head, according to the report. The witness told police that when Mantella noticed her reaction, he began laughing and continued to harass the animals around him.

Police said Mantella was aware that his kicks could kill or seriously injur the swans and that all of the kicks were intentional, WKMG reported.
