TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Floridians may have no idea that they are owed money, jewelry, coins, stamps and more.

The Florida Division of Unclaimed Property said there are claims worth a combined value of $1 billion.

Those claims come from dormant accounts in financial institutions, insurance and utility companies, securities and trust holdings. Aside from cash and unreturned deposits, they also include items from abandoned safe deposit boxes.

“Month after month and year after year, our unclaimed property team has continued to raise the bar,” chief financial officer Jeff Atwater said in a news release. “Their dedication and commitment to putting these forgotten-about funds back into the hands of Floridians is unmatched, and I am proud to announce their latest feat. Millions more lays waiting to be claimed and I hope that all Floridians will take two minutes to look on our website for an unclaimed property account in their name.”

In Miami-Dade County, $397,664,444.93 is owed to 1,344,591 accounts. In Seminole County, that number is $249,462,720.59 to 931,578 accounts.
