POMPANO BEACH, Fla. – Two people died Sunday morning in Pompano Beach after a Tri-Rail train struck a car that was on the tracks, the Broward Sheriff's Office said.

The crash took place about 9:20 a.m. on Atlantic Boulevard, just west of Interstate 95.

"I was outside and I just heard a 'boom,'" Mina Gonzalez said.

The identities of the victims weren't immediately revealed.

"We went over there to try to save them people, but it was too late," Gonzalez said.

Atlantic Boulevard was shut down for hours, traffic was rerouted and trains were temporarily halted along the tracks during the investigation.
