1 injured in police-involved shooting

Jeffrey Paul, known as DJ Big Boy, listed in serious condition but stable condition

NORTHEAST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. – Police officers looking for a stolen cell phone shot an armed man who opened the door, according to Miami-Dade police.

The shooting happened at 551 NE 177th Street about 5 a.m. Thursday.

Bernie Jadott says it was the middle of the night. He was home sleeping when suddenly he heard a noise in the back yard.

He alerted his brother, 32-year-old Jeffery Paul, a well-known area DJ who goes by the nickname DJ Big Boy. Big Boy grabbed a hand gun and headed for the door.

There are two different versions of what happened next.

Miami-Dade police says two officers knocked on the door and Big Boy walked out, armed and combative.

"At that time, there was a confrontation, and that's when the officers shot this individual," said Javier Baez with Miami-Dade police.

But Jadott says that's not true. He says his brother opened the door expecting burglars, and before he could say a word, police officers opened fire.

It's unclear how many shots were fired, but Big Boy was shot three times.

Rescue crews rushed him to Ryder Trauma Center where he remains in serious condition.

"He's a good guy. Nothing like that happens on this block," said Tony, a childhood friend of Paul.

"People around here don't do stuff like that," said another man. "All the man was doing was doing and playing local music. That's a great guy right there."

Paul was airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he was listed in serious but stable condition.

Two of the man's relatives were at home when the shooting happened.

The officer involved in the shooting was placed on administrative leave.
