13 fall into water after dock collapses in Boca Raton

2 people take to Boca Raton Regional Hospital with minor injuries

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Thirteen people fell into the water Tuesday after a dock collapsed in Boca Raton, authorities said.

The incident was reported at a condominium complex on 18th Street, between South Dixie Highway and Federal Highway.

A family had gathered for a reunion on the dock and was preparing to take a group photograph when it collapsed.

"They wanted to get a group picture out on the water, and so they were in the process of stacking everybody up, as far as tall people in the back, shorter people in the front," Boca Raton Fire Rescue inspector Bob Lemons said.

At least 15 adults were already standing on the dock when the wood started to give way.

"It didn't drop straight down," Lemons said. "It dropped at an angle, so it looks more like a ramp right now. So some people went directly in the water. Others kind of tumbled down."

All 13 people managed to swim to safety.

Lemons said two people were taken to Boca Regional Hospital with minor injuries.

Inspectors were called to the scene to determine what caused the dock to collapse.

Local 10 News called city officials and the management group about the incident seeking comment.
