2 charged after Starbucks robbery, police chase

Darryl Brown, Josue Jean charged

MIAMI – Police on Thursday arrested two men accused of robbing a Starbucks in Miami, then leading police on a high-speed chase into Miami Gardens.

Police charged 21-year-old Darryl Brown with burglary of an unoccupied dwelling, armed carjacking, burglary with assault or battery, armed robbery, and using a firearm while committing a felony. They charged 22-year-old Josue Jean with armed robbery.

Jail records showed both men had no bond.

The robbery happened at 6815 Biscayne Boulevard about 6:50 a.m. Wednesday, police said.

According to an arrest affidavit, Brown walked into the Starbucks wearing a ski mask with a gun in his waistband. He demanded money from two employees, who gave him about $800 in cash and some change.

An off-duty firefighter saw Brown run out of the Starbucks and into a waiting Toyota Camry, police said. The firefighter followed Brown and Jean until police officers picked up the pursuit.

Police followed the pair on Interstate 95 to Florida's Turnpike, where they crashed near the Golden Glades interchange, police said. Police took Jean into custody there, but Brown ran off.

Video showed Brown running through the Miami Gardens neighborhood, hopping fences and dropping cash. He tried taking a woman's car keys, but she ran away from him.

"I saw him coming over the fence and he was hollering, 'Give me your keys! Give me your keys!' and I backed up because I didn't see no weapon in his hand," said Marilyn, who asked Local 10 to withhold her last name. "Both his hands were occupied -- one with money, one with holding up the pants -- so I didn't see a gun, and that's what prompted me to run."

Police eventually arrested Brown at East Sunshine Parkway and Northwest 175th Street.

The men may have been involved in three other robberies since the weekend, police said.
