2 killed in Key Largo crash

FHP: Southbound driver crossed into northbound lane

KEY LARGO, Fla. - Two drivers died Sunday after a van traveling in the southbound lanes of U.S. 1 in Key Largo crossed into the northbound lanes, colliding with a car, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Police said Ralph Scheffler, 79, of Key Largo, was driving south on U.S. 1 at Mile Marker 102 in the Right lane when, for an unknown reason, he veered off the roadway and onto the center grass median.

FHP said Scheffler's 2001 Dodge van crossed into the northbound lanes, and the front left of his van collided with the front left of a 2006 Toyota Scion driven by Maria Esteves, 61, of Miami.

Esteves died at the scene, FHP said. A 16-year-old girl who was in her car was taken to Mariners Hospital for treatment.

Scheffler was flown to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center, where he died, police said.
