2 teens face charges after police-involved shooting

Charges unrelated to police-involved shooting in southwest Miami-Dade

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY. Fla. – Police have arrested two teens in connection with an incident that occurred Wednesday in southwest Miami-Dade County, just before a police-involved shooting took place.

About a half-hour before the shooting took place, a group of people walking near Southwest 215th Street said they were approached by three teens in a white sedan, Detective Marjorie Eloi said.

The group recognized passenger Christopher Jones, 16, who got out of the sedan, sat on a lowered passenger side door, and pointed a semi-automatic handgun at them, according to an arrest report.

He then said to the victims, "Where's your brother? Where's your brother? You are lacking," the arrest report stated. Jones then got back into the sedan, which headed eastbound on Southwest 215th Street.

Shortly after the incident, which took place at about noon, police got a call from the mother of one of the victims, who said her son had been threatened at gunpoint by a man who came out of a white sedan.

At about 12:30 p.m., detectives in the area were investigating a carjacking that led them to Southwest 224th Street and Southwest 112th Avenue, when they spotted a white sedan believed to have been stolen in the May 17 carjacking, Eloi said.

A 15-year-old driver lead police on a short chase after the stop, and Jones later got out of the moving car and fired at officers as they tried to stop him, Eloi said.

The driver and a second passenger later ran away, and the passenger pointed a gun at a detective, Eloi said. The detective fired back, striking the passenger.

The 15-year-old boy accused of firing at officers the second time was shot by police and taken to Kendall Regional Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. The 15-year-old driver was not injured and was taken into custody.

Jones faces charges of aggravated assault with a firearm and possession of a firearm by a minor.

The driver was arrested on a grand theft charge.
