School holds forum after meningitis death

Health department field questions about bacterial meningitis

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Following the death of a student from bacterial meningitis, staff from the health department will be at Coral Reef Senior High School today to answer questions about the illness.

The discussion will be held from 9 a.m. to Noon on Sunday morning at Coral Reef Senior High School, 10101 SW 152nd Street in Richmond Heights.

Christopher R. Valdes, 18, died at 8 a.m. Friday, Miami-Dade police said. Officials said the teenager had visited an urgent car Thursday, but that the name of the center was being withheld from the public. The teen died within an hour of arriving at a local hospital Friday.

A news conference was held Friday night right after the case was confirmed.

"Not every single person who knew [Valdes] has to be worried," said Dr. Alvaro Mejia-Echeverry. He also said people would have had to be in contact with Valdes' saliva to become infected with meningitis.

Miami-Dade County Public Schools' Student Services Crisis Management Team has been notified and will respond to the school as needed.
