Relatives speak out after fatal crash

Driver's mother says son may have fallen asleep at the wheel

MIAMI – Relatives of two people killed in a crash in Coral Gables over the weekend spoke with Local 10's John Turchin Monday about the pain of losing a loved one so suddenly.

Meanwhile, the mother of the driver who hit them thinks her son may have fallen asleep behind the wheel.

"He took my mom. He took my best friend," said Lizmary Martinez, the daughter of one of the victims. "It's a horrible feeling," she said, holding a shirt her mother wore right before she died.

The family is heartbroken, unable to comprehend what happened.

Lizmary's sister is now responsible for caring for and raising her sister and 10-year-old brother.

"I just pray and hope that she didn't go through much, that it was instant," said Yuri Blen.

Maria Martinez and Marlon Gutierrez fell in love soon after they met five years ago.

Gutierrez played in the mariachi band at Tulum's Mexican Bar and Grill in Miramar, where his brother says he could be found most nights.

They were outgoing, hard-working people who planned on spending the rest of their lives together. But those dreams came to an abrupt end Sunday morning when, according to police, a car driven by Ervens Prudent, also known as DJ AOL, slammed into the back of their vehicle which had stopped at the light on Southwest 8th Street and Douglas Road.

"You just wonder why them, why at that time?" Blen said.

Toxicology reports are pending.

Gutierrez's family cannot afford the funeral and burial costs to send his body home to Nicaragua where his children live. They have set up an account to help raise money.
