MIAMI – Miami police are looking for the gunman who shot and killed another man who was sitting on a bus bench.
The shooting happened about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Northwest 36th Street and 14th Avenue.
The victim, described by police as a man in his thirties, was sitting at the eastbound bus stop when authorities said the gunman "casually" walked over to him and shot him in the head.
Police said the man attempted to cross to the other side of Northwest 36th Street, but collapsed and died in the street before he could get help.
Ariel Gomez told Local 10's Baron James he watched helplessly as the man had used the last moments of his life apparently trying to get help.
"I just heard the shot and I pretty much see the guy walking this way and he collapsed, you know," Gomez said. "I guess he was looking for help, though."
Gomez said he didn't have enough time to run over and try to help him.
"I was standing on the side because I thought there was going to be a gunfight or something," said Gomez. "I didn't want to get shot."
Miami police said the gunman casually walked away as a Metro bus headed toward the scene of the crime.
"He was quite casual and quite brazen when he walked up to this man and just shot him in broad daylight and just casually walked away," said Miami police spokesperson Kenia Reyes.
Police are checking the bus' surveillance videos and interviewing the driver, as well as other people in the area.
Miami police describes the gunman as a man in his early 20s who was last seen wearing a white shirt before he left the scene heading northbound onto Northwest 15th Avenue.
"We do know that beyond that surveillance video that may have captured the crime, there are people that may have seen the man fleeing and to where he is right now," Reyes said.
Gomez said he never saw the shooter.
"There should be cameras everywhere on every corner," said Gomez.
The victim's name wasn't immediately released.
"He's lying lifeless here on the street and we do need the community's help to let us know as to what actually took place," said Reyes. "Right now we're not ruling anything out, but it appears that it may be a robbery."
