Tow truck driver killed; Shooter injured by BSO deputy

Shooting happened at St Croix apartments in Lauderdale Lakes

LAUDERDALE LAKES, Fla. – A South Florida tow truck driver was shot and killed by the man whose car he was hauling away, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office.

The shooting happened around 2:15 p.m. at the St. Croix apartments, 4150 NW 34th St.

The tow truck driver, David Herr, 36, was getting ready to haul away one of the vehicles at about 3 p.m. when he was confronted by the car's owner.

According to police, the man shot Herr several times. He then turned the gun and fired at deputies responding to the scene.

"They took on gunfire from a suspect. One of our deputies returned fire. He struck the suspect," said Sheriff Scott Israel.

Khaleel Spencer said he heard several gunshots over a 30-minute period. One woman said the tow truck driver was her ex-husband, and that she knew his job was dangerous. o

"Somebody who didn't want their car towed, and now he's going to go to prison for the rest of his life," said Kevin Godfrey, who said he knew the driver. "I can't believe it."

The shooter, a man in his 30's, was taken to Broward Health Medical Center in critical condition.
