DAVIE, Fla. – Back-to-school got underway in Broward Monday morning, and the county's school bus system was looking much smoother than this time last year.
During the first week of school a year ago, there weren't enough bus drivers and several of them didn't know their routes. But Broward Schools Superintendent Robert Runcie says things are different this time around. Superintendent Runcie says there are more drivers and a more stable route system this year.

"Maintaining stability with our routes, we were changing our routes too often last year and it was an effort to really meet the needs of families and students, but we're putting some discipline around that, and insuring that our routes are more stable so when a driver is out every day, they're not seeing a different configuration in our routes," said Superintendent Runcie.
Superintendent Runcie rode on one of the buses and is having breakfast and lunch with students. He has been the head of Broward Schools for three years. Runcie is in charge of 260,000 students, nearly 14,000 teachers, 30,thousand support staff, and a $2 Billion budget.
An estimated 85,000 students took the bus to school on Monday.
