Truck hits, kills woman walking to church

Fannie Ash, 78, was hit by pickup truck Monday night in Miami

MIAMI – A 78-year-old woman has died after she was hit by a pickup truck in Miami Monday night.

According to officials, Fannie Ash was struck near the intersection of NW 12th Avenue and 61st Street just after 7 p.m.

Her family told Local 10 she was walking to evening services when she was hit.

Ash was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital in critical condition, where she later died.

"From what I understand, she was stable at first and then went into cardiac arrest," said Roketa Mansfield, Ash's daughter-in-law.

Miami Police spokesperson Kenia Reyes confirmed Tuesday morning the driver of the truck initially left the scene, before returning. She says the investigation was not being treated as a hit and run.

Late Monday night, investigators were looking into the possibility that the driver may have been intoxicated, but no charges have been filed.

"We know mistakes happen and we know that there are accidents, but we just need some type of closure," Mansfield said.

She added that neighbors have been asking for a stoplight at the intersection for some time.
