Forget texting, Americans are surfing the web while driving

Surfing the web behind the wheel doubles in 4 years

PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. – A growing number of American drivers admit to surfing the web on their smartphones while driving.

A survey from State Farm Insurance shows that 24 percent of drivers admit to surfing the web from behind the wheel. That's nearly double the 13 percent in 2009.

The data is even worse among younger drivers. Nearly half of people 18-29 are accessing the internet on the road.

The study also showed jumps in the number of people reading or responding to email, and checking their social media accounts.

Surfing the web while driving is actually growing at a faster pace than texting while driving. Experts attribute that to the high-profile campaigns against texting while driving.
