FAA investigating unfit pilot allegations

American Airlines relief pilot accused of smelling like alcohol

MIAMI – The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating allegations that an American Airlines crew member was unfit for flight.

Officials with the airline said Sunday that a relief pilot on flight 930 was accused of smelling like alcohol. Ivan Rivera, the Miami-based chairman with the Allied Pilots Association, said the relief pilot was screened by three managers and results came back clean.

The flight was diverted to San Juan, Puerto Rico, where another flight crew took over and took passengers to Miami International Airport.

"We apologize to our customers for the inconvenience and the delayed arrival into Miami," said a spokesperson for American Airlines.

The airline is also conducting an internal investigation.
