Grandmother struck while pushing stroller dies

2 boys remain at hospital with serious injuries

SUNRISE, Fla. – A grandmother who was pushing a stroller with a baby and toddler across the street Wednesday night in Sunrise has died.

After 7 p.m., police said 61-year-old Li Fang Dong was pushing the stroller with two boys across Pine Island Road and Sunset Strip when all three were struck by a vehicle traveling south on Pine Island Road.

The driver of the vehicle, a 23-year-old Davie resident, immediately stopped at the scene. That driver, whose identity has not been released, was uninjured.

The three victims were transported to Broward Health by helicopter and ground units.

Dong later died at the hospital.

Doon Doon, 2, remains in critical condition with face and spinal cord injuries. If he recovers, the family said he may not be able to walk again.

The other boy, 1-year-old Mason, suffers from serious injuries and is still in the hospital.

The family said Dong was with the boys every day and recently moved to South Florida in October from China with her husband.

Dong would take the boys on walks around the neighborhood and family members said Wednesday night she crossed the street the way she did because the light at the intersection had been broken for quite sometime, but there was no apparent evidence of this.

The family said they are upset the driver hasn't been charged and feels there's no way the family of three could not have been spotted.

Sunrise police said no charges are expected for the driver and the investigation is still on-going.
