HOMESTEAD, Fla. – Mirta Maltes is the founder of Chain of Love Abandoned Animals Rescue and is dedicated to saving helpless dogs and finding them new homes.
She never planned to spend most of her days off rescuing abandoned dogs. It's something that arose because of what she was seeing in the community -- people abandoning dogs in remote areas of Homestead.
"Some people out here in this area don't want to spay their dogs because they want to keep one of the siblings. What they have to understand is that most litters have six to seven puppies, so what happens to the rest of them?" Mirales said.
She says she finds neglected dogs and puppies in all sorts of conditions and wishes she had more resources to use towards her cause.
Until measures are taken to create more awareness about the responsibility of neutering and spaying our pets, Maltes believes the problem will only get worse.
