Lion cub debuts at Zoo Miami

Zoo spokesman says Kwazi battled health scares

MIAMI – A lion cub made his debut at Zoo Miami for the first time Thursday.

"This is a historic day here for Zoo Miami because this is the first time in the history of the zoo that we've been able to put a mom, lion and her cub out on exhibit together," Zoo Miami spokesman Ron Magill said.

Kwasi was born Dec. 15, but because of early health scares had around-the-clock supplemental feeding and care.

"Quite frankly, there were several times where we thought we were going to lose him," Magill said.

Experts say most lions don't even live past a year in the wild. With Kwasi, lot of effort by staff was put in to assure his survival and give him a happy home.

"This is just a culmination of a ton of work," Magill said.
