911 call: Twin toddlers dead in community pool
BSO releases audio of frightened caller reporting drowning
DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. – A frightened caller tells Broward Sheriff's Office dispatch of a frightening discovery in a community pool.
Two girls, twin toddlers, were found floating in a community pool Tuesday; they later died.
The female caller tells the dispatcher that the girls "drowned, they're just dead."
Broward Sheriff's Office deputies were called to the pool at the Tivoli Park apartment complex in Deerfield Beach about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday after the 2-year-old toddlers were found.
A couple visiting from out of town were on their way to the Jacuzzi when they noticed the children in the pool and pulled them out. It was unclear how long they were in the water.
One toddler was airlifted to Broward Health Medical Center. The other was taken by ambulance.
The toddlers, identified as Harmani and Harmony West, were pronounced dead at the hospital.
Detectives are still trying to determine how the girls got out of their apartment and why their parents didn't realize they were gone.
Investigators said the girls wandered out of their second-floor apartment adjacent to the pool, crossed a courtyard and entered the unlocked gate to the pool.
Relatives and friends gathered at the complex told Local 10's Roger Lohse that the parents are devastated by the deaths and want to know why the pool wasn't secured.
When Local 10 tried to contact the leasing office to explain why the gate to the community pool wasn't locked, no one was available.
"It's been open for as long as I can remember," resident Elizabeth Rockafellow told Local 10.
Rockafellow said she feels sick just thinking about what happened.
"I don't have children, so it's hard for me to relate to that kind of loss, but anybody can relate when they see two little, beautiful 2-and-a-half-year-old girls, and they're gone."
The Department of Children and Families is also investigating.
