2 dead in crash on Tamiami Trail

All lanes closed in both directions for much of Monday morning

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Tamiami Trail was closed in both directions for several hours after a fatal crash Monday morning.

The Florida Highway Patrol said two people were killed after a Ford Mustang speeding while going westbound collided head-on with a Chevrolet Silverado.

The crash happened about 11 miles west of Krome Avenue.

"Definitely speed was a factor," said Trooper Joe Sanchez. "The accident was spread through 300 yards."

Troopers identified the driver of the Mustang as 25-year-old Jerome McKinley Huggins. The truck's driver has been identified as 47-year-old Russell Larkins.

Both vehicles were left nearly unrecognizable after the crash. Investigators said there were no passengers in either vehicle.
