Trial set for former Miami Heat center Greg Oden

NBA player faces felony battery charges alleging he punched girlfriend in face

INDIANAPOLIS – Former Miami Heat center Greg Oden appeared in an Indianapolis courtroom Wednesday on charges alleging that he punched his ex-girlfriend in the face during a fight.

A Marion County judge set an Oct. 22 trial date and allowed Oden to remain free on bond as long as he wears a GPS monitor. Oden is allowed to leave Indiana.

The NBA free agent, who played for the Miami Heat last season, was booked into jail Aug. 7 and is charged with one count of battery resulting in serious bodily injury, a Level 5 felony, as well as misdemeanor charges of domestic battery and battery resulting in bodily injury.

According to the police report, the 26-year-old was arrested at a home in Indianapolis after punching a 24-year-old woman who suffered minor injuries.

Officers said they found her lying inside the home with blood covering her face and blood on the floor. Oden allegedly admitted to hitting the woman during a struggle and told police, "I was wrong and I know what has to happen."

Police said Oden told them the victim was his ex-girlfriend whom he had dated for about two years. He said they broke up two months ago.

Oden has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
