Family of boy who drowned in pool speaks to Local 10 News

9-year-old drowns while attending birthday party in Southwest Ranches

SOUTHWEST RANCHES, Fla. – Home videos and childhood photos are priceless for the family of 9-year-old Jacquez Osbourne, who drowned Sunday while at a birthday party.

He was a talented football player and a big part of a very big family, but his life was cut short and relatives want to know why.

"It's just hard," said the child's brother, Lynval Sutherland. "I slept with him the night before, I ate with him the night before. It doesn't feel real."

Sunday, Davie police said Osbourne was the guest at a football buddy's birthday party in Southwest Ranches.

His family said Osbourne's football coach and the coach's wife took him to the party. Osbourne's mother told Local 10 News she informed the adults that her son had taken swimming classes but was not a great swimmer.

Police said the 9-year-old was found at the bottom of a swimming pool. There's no word how long he had been there.

Osbourne's mother said detectives told her the boy was only found after swimmers went back into the pool and saw him at the bottom.

Neighbors said adults at the party ran door to door, searching for someone who knew CPR.

Osborne was pronounced dead by the time crews got him to the hospital. His tragic death is one of thousands of stories across south Florida.

Officials insist parents should learn CPR and be mindful around any pool or body of water.

Monday night, the Department of Children and Families was at the family's home asking questions about what they knew.

It's unclear if the boy hit his head before entering the water.

The death remains under investigation.
