West Palm Beach man arrested in connection with gun theft at Love's Auto Group

BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. – A West Palm Beach man who was caught on surveillance video stealing a gun from a South Florida business has been arrested, police said.

Jessie James Smith was arrested Wednesday night in connection with the gun theft at Love's Auto Group in Boynton Beach.

Boynton Beach police said a man entered the business through an open bay, went into the office and stole a pistol from a desk drawer.

Police disseminated the video to the public in the hopes of identifying the thief.

According to the police report, a patron at the Palm Beach Kennel Club called 911 after recognizing Smith from the surveillance video and notified deputies who were there. Deputies asked Smith to come to the office, where Smith was met by Boynton Beach police detectives.

Police said Smith confessed to the crime after being shown the video, saying he sold the gun to someone for $100 and drugs.
