Man detained, suspicious item at Miami International Airport removed

All-clear given after bomb squad removes metal cylinder

MIAMI – The Miami-Dade Police Department is investigating after a suspicious item was found at a checkpoint at Miami International Airport.

The Transportation Security Administration at MIA notified MDPD at 6 p.m. Friday of a suspicious item found in concourse J-Central Checkpoint.

Police said a man tried to go through TSA checkpoint with a metal cylinder, which was deemed suspicious by TSA. The man was then detained by authorities.

A bomb squad arrived at the airport and examined the cylinder. Police said the item was removed and the concourse reopened around 8 p.m.

The south portion of the terminal was evacuated, according to MIA's Twitter notice.
