Pompano Beach boat fire sends 1 to hospital

Man arrives at hospital with burns

POMPANO BEACH, Fla. – A person was taken to the hospital after a boat fire in Pompano Beach.

It happened about 2 a.m. Monday along Bay Drive and Hillsboro Inlet.

According to Pompano Beach Fire Rescue, no one was found on the boat when firefighters arrived at the scene, and the U.S. Coast Guard and the Broward Sheriff's Office searched by boat and helicopter for any potential victims.

Authorities said a man with burns walked into Broward Health North and claimed he was the victim of a crime later that morning. He later changed his story, telling authorities he was on the boat that was burned.

The boat was destroyed in the fire.

It is unclear if the man is the owner of the boat or if he was trespassing. He was transferred to Jackson Memorial Hospital's burn unit, where he is recovering from his injuries.

The state fire marshal's office is now investigating.
