FIU patrol officer fires weapon into air during training exercise

Jose Mesa relieved of duty pending investigation

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A patrol officer at Florida International University has been relieved of duty after he fired his weapon into the air during a training exercise at a Miami-Dade facility, authorities said.

FIU's police chief said the incident involving Jose Mesa happened Tuesday.

Mesa was relieved of duty pending the outcome of the investigation. Officials said he has a total of eight years of duty.

Charges could be filed in the incident.
