Man arrested for shining laser at BSO helicopter

Jonathan Leiva charged with felony for incident

COCONUT CREEK, Fla. – Broward Sheriff's Office deputies arrested a Coconut Creek man after he shined a laser into the cockpit of a BSO helicopter.

Jonathan Alan Leiva, 22, was arrested Nov. 26 and charged with a felony count of misuse of a laser lighting device.

According to the arrest report, the BSO helicopter unit was flying near the area of the 6700 block of Lyons Road.

The pilot then informed an officer on the ground that a subject had shined a green laser in the cockpit on three separate occasions. The pilot said that the laser hit he and a fellow crew member in the eye.

From the air, the pilot was able to see Leiva run into his home via a side garage door.

Upon receiving the information, the ground officer traveled to the home and made contact with Leiva, who admitted to shining the laser at the helicopter.
