LAUDERDALE LAKES, Fla. – The American Red Cross is assisting a family that was forced out by flames Monday morning in Lauderdale Lakes.
Clautide Nelfroit said she was at work when she got the call.
Nelfroit said her four young children, ages 3 to 12, were at her sister's house at the time. She said her home, however, was destroyed.
"I pass out," she said. "I pass out. Thank you God nobody in the house."
Shortly after the blaze, which started in the kitchen, Red Cross volunteers showed up at the request of the fire department to provide Nelfroit and her children with essential goods and offered them a hotel room straight through Christmas.
"She was able to get her clothing, so we're going to give her some smoke soap to get rid of the smell," Red Cross volunteer Debbie Sapp said.
Now neighbors and relatives are rallying around the family to help make this holiday a little brighter.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
If anyone would like to help, donate to the Red Cross online or contact the Red Cross to be put in touch with the family.
