Carney was on his first dive of the day in about 72 feet of water when his dive buddy noticed Carney's regulator was out of his mouth, Herrin said. They had been on the bottom for about 10 minutes.

Carney's dive buddy said he was limp and not moving, so he tried to pull him to the surface, but he was too heavy.

Others on the boat were able to help pull Carney out of the water. They then called the U.S. Coast Guard for help.

Carney was pronounced dead at the Coast Guard station in Key West.

An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.
