Man apparently drowns after running from deputies, jumping into canal

Divers later find man's body in Pompano Beach canal

POMPANO BEACH, Fla. – A man apparently drowned late Sunday night after running from Broward Sheriff's Office deputies and jumping into a canal.

Deputies had been conducting extra patrols in the area of McNab Road and Andrews Avenue after recent burglaries to businesses there. About 11:15 p.m., they saw two men wearing dark clothing riding bicycles and carrying flashlights.

As deputies were questioning the men, one of them ran off.

The man ran through the parking lot of St. Henry Catholic Church, taking off his clothes along the way. He then jumped into a canal behind the church.

A deputy saw the man surface once and then sink under the water. The deputy jumped into the water to rescue him but couldn't find him.

BSO divers later found the man's body about an hour later.

The Broward County medical examiner's office will determine the man's cause of death and identity.
