Man arrested in fatal North Lauderdale hit-and-run crash, deputies say

NORTH LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A 35-year-old man accused of taking off after fatally striking an Irish tourist in North Lauderdale was arrested Saturday, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office.

The incident happened at 4:55 a.m. Saturday in the 5300 block of State Road 7 in North Lauderdale.

Deputies said the Martin O'Connor, 36, and two friends who were visiting from Ireland were walking south on a sidewalk next to U.S. 441 in North Lauderdale on their way back from a bar to their hotel.

For unknown reasons, Martin began walking across the road and he was hit by Richard Jennings. Deputies said Jennings, who was driving his girlfriend's black BMW, fled.

North Lauderdale paramedics took O'Connor to Broward Health Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, deputies said.

An acquaintance of Jennings who saw the damaged vehicle called BSO. Detectives arrested Jennings, 35, at his Hollywood home shortly after 6 p.m. Saturday, deputies said.

Detectives said they were working to identify and notify the victim's next of kin in Ireland of his death.
