Family of mentally ill man killed by police interrupts commission meeting

Lavall Hall, 25, killed after getting into altercation with police

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The family of a man shot dead by police interrupted a commission meeting Wednesday.

Family members called on the Miami Gardens Police Department to release video from the night Lavall Hall, 25, was shot to death.

"That's all I want -- justice," mother Catherine Daniels told Local 10 News.

Mayor Oliver Gilbert agreed that the video should be made public, but cautioned that it was up to the state attorney's office to decide.

"We don't have the authority to do it," Gilbert said. "That's the state law. Not a Miami Gardens one."

Supporters said they would protest the upcoming Jazz in the Gardens music festival at Sun Life Stadium next month if the video was not released.

Police said Hall, who suffered from mental health issues, hit one of their officers with a broomstick after his mother called 911 asking for help.

The family wanted to have him hospitalized under the Baker Act.

Both officers involved in the shooting are on administrative injury leave pending the outcome of an investigation.
