Suspected burglar killed by homeowner in North Lauderdale

BSO: Resident shoots, kills man trying to break into home

NORTH LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A burglary suspect was shot and killed by a homeowner in North Lauderdale early Friday morning, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office.

Deputies were called to a home at 8161 SW 11th St. just after 3 a.m.

BSO spokeswoman Keyla Concepcion said the homeowner "heard something in his back yard, armed himself, went to the back yard and that's when he noticed that there was a man attempting to break into his home and he fired his weapon."

The homeowner told deputies he was trying to protect his wife, 30-year-old child and 14-year-old grandchild.

No one inside the home was hurt.

The suspect was taken to Broward Health North, where he later died.

Neighbors told Local 10 News they've seen a recent spike in crime in the area.

However, Concepcion said North Lauderdale had a 40 percent drop in burglaries from 2014 to 2013. She said the neighborhood where the shooting occurred had a 42 percent decrease in residential burglaries in the first six months of 2014 compared to that same time period in 2013.
