Exit ramp to eastbound I-595 shuts down after crash

WESTON, Fla. – Two people are dead and five others were injured after a sport utility vehicle overturned on an Interstate 75 exit ramp Wednesday morning, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash happened about 9:40 a.m. Wednesday on the northbound exit ramp from I-75 to eastbound Interstate 595.

St. Pierre Mellien, 63, was driving eastbound on the I-75 ramp to I-595 when his 2004 Ford SUV sustained a right-rear tire tread separation, causing Mellien to lose control and overturn, troopers said.

Mellien was pronounced dead at the scene.

Six other people were taken to local hospitals. Louisette Jean, 46, was airlifted to Broward Health Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

The ramp was closed for the investigation and reopened at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday. Northbound traffic was backed up while rescuers worked to help the victims and clear the wreckage.

Troopers said the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
