Pedestrian struck, killed by train in Pompano Beach

Freight train traveling to Jacksonville when it struck pedestrian walking on tracks


POMPANO BEACH, Fla. – A pedestrian was struck and killed by a freight train Thursday afternoon in Pompano Beach.

Broward Sheriff's Office deputies said Dixie Highway was closed between Southwest Sixth and Northwest Sixth streets while homicide detectives investigated the crash.

Sky 10 was above the train, which was stopped on the railroad tracks.

A body could be seen covered by a yellow tarp under the wheel well of one of the train cars.

Florida East Coast Railway spokeswoman Debra Phillips said the train was on its way to Jacksonville when it struck a pedestrian who was walking on the tracks. The victim's identity wasn't immediately known.

Dixie Highway was reopened just after 6 p.m.
