3 killed in Miami Lakes crash

Police cite speeding as cause of crash

MIAMI LAKES, Fla. – Three people were killed in a car crash early Wednesday morning in Miami Lakes.

Miami-Dade police said the car was speeding westbound on Miami Lakes Drive when the driver lost control and slammed into a traffic light at about 1:20 a.m. The driver and her two passengers were killed.

Police wouldn't identify those killed but said the driver is a woman in her 30s. The two other passengers are a man in his 40s and a woman in her 30s. Their relationship to the driver is not known.

Residents who live nearby told Local 10 News that they heard the impact and rushed over to try to help.

"Everybody started running, you know, jumping the fences to come see what happened," said one neighbor.

The intersection was closed until just after 6 a.m. Residents said the intersection is extremely dangerous and has been the site of at least three other fatal crashes.

"This is a bad intersection," said one witness. "These cars come around here, 1 o'clock or 2 o'clock in the morning. Even during the day, and they're flying."

A close family friend of the driver told Local 10 News that the victim is a 31-year-old single mother of a 12-year-old boy. She said the woman was hanging out at the Ale House with friends before the fatal crash.

The condition of the vehicle forced investigators to leave the bodies inside until it was towed to the medical examiner's office.
