CORAL GABLES, Fla. – An arrest has been made in connection with a fatal hit-and-run crash in Coral Gables last month.
Coral Gables police announced the arrest of Juan Carlos Redero during a news conference Friday morning.
Police Chief Edward J. Hudak said Redero was behind the wheel of a gray Nissan Altima when it struck a bicyclist at Bird Road and Granada Boulevard early in the morning on March 26.
Hudak said a designated driver who was taking some friends home witnessed the crash and called 911. She told police that the car kept going for three blocks before she saw the driver get out and remove the bicycle from underneath it.
"She positively identified Mr. Redero after the fact and watching him remove the evidence from under his vehicle," Hudak said.
The next day, police found the damaged car parked in the backyard of Redero's home, partially covered.
"He put a children's pool over where the impact damage was on the vehicle," Hudak said.
Police spent the next few weeks gathering evidence in the investigation.
"We were able to obtain DNA evidence, as well as other forensic evidence, that linked the vehicle to the scene," Hudak said.
The victim was also identified as Carlos Alberto Suarez, 33, of Mexico. Police said he was living in an efficiency unit nearby.
"We have got to come to a place where bicyclists, pedestrians and cars can co-exist on our streets," Hudak said.
Redero faces charges of evidence tampering and leaving the scene of a crash involving death.
