MARGATE, Fla. – The top portion of the Margate Veterans Park statue that was stolen last month was found at a recycling center in Fort Lauderdale.
Police said maintenance crews from the city discovered the Battlefield Cross Statue had been vandalized on April 27 and that a piece of the statue was missing.
Police said a few days later, investigators were told that the missing piece was sold to Sunrise Recycling in Fort Lauderdale.
The stolen piece was recovered April 30. Investigators said it appears the person who sold the statue piece was not the same person who damaged and removed the object from its original location.
Police said the owner of the recycling center, Don Edwards, was unaware that the object taken in as scrap metal was part of the statue. Edwards has offered to pay for the statue's repair.
Police are still searching or the person(s) who vandalized the statue.
Anyone with information is asked to call detectives at 954-935-5417.
