Grandmother, toddler die after pickup truck crashes into canal in west Miami-Dade County
FHP: Driver lost control, went through guardrail
MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A woman and her grandson have died after a pickup truck crashed into a canal off Tamiami Trail and Krome Avenue early Thursday morning.
According to Florida Highway Patrol, a woman from the Miccosukee Tribe was behind the wheel traveling westbound when she lost control and went through a guardrail.
The woman, identified as Farren Cypress, 41, was driving with her two grandchildren, who troopers said were not in car seats.
A passerby spotted the break in the guardrail and called 911.
"They got off, they looked around and sure enough they saw a toddler floating in the canal, (and) a little time after that they saw the other toddler floating in the canal," FHP spokesman Joe Sanchez said.
Troopers said the Cypress and her grandson, Wyatt Rockwell, 2, were pronounced dead at the scene. The other toddler, identified as Seraphina Rockwell, 1, was taken to Nicklaus Children's Hospital in critical condition.
Troopers said it appears that speed was a factor in the case.
Tamiami Trail was shut down in both directions at Southwest 177th Avenue as authorities investigated the crash.
