Man in custody after Fort Lauderdale carjacking

Dameon J. Wilkey, 32, accused of pushing woman to ground, taking off in car

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A man is in custody after a woman was carjacked Thursday morning in Fort Lauderdale, police said.

The incident was reported just after 8:30 a.m. at a BJ's parking lot at 5100 NW Ninth Ave.

Fort Lauderdale police said the suspect, identified as Dameon J. Wilkey, 32, pushed Katy Talton, 74, to the ground as she was getting out of her car and drove off in it.

"He was yelling, 'Help me, help me,'" Talton told Local 10 News reporter Shyann Malone. "I grabbed his arm and he pushed me down and said, 'Leave me alone.'"

According to officers, Wilkey had gotten into a crash in the 1500 block of Northwest 62nd Street and fled the scene on foot.

Vanessa Joseph said she was on her way to work when she was confronted by the same man who tried to grab her car keys from her.

"I just call out God, thanking him for saving my life today," she told Local 10 News reporter Shyann Malone.

Joseph said she thinks she was hit by two cars -- "from the front and from the back" -- during the struggle.

Police said Wilkey drove over a median in Talton's Hyundai Sonata which disabled the vehicle.

Lorenzo Woodburn told Local 10 that Wilkey then tried to steal his car, too, but Woodburn fought back, punching his attacker.

Wilkey was arrested shortly after the incident.
