Fallen power lines spark fire in West Park

BSO Fire Rescue spokesman says incident is weather-related

WEST PARK, Fla. – Broward Sheriff's Office firefighters extinguished a fire in West Park Tuesday afternoon that was caused by fallen power lines.

BSO Fire Rescue spokesman Mike Jachles said the fire behind homes off Southwest 43rd Avenue and 38th Street was weather-related.

Local 10 News reporter Andrew Perez, reporting from the scene, said authorities used a fire extinguisher because a pole caught fire.

About a block of houses in the area were without power because of the incident.

Florida Power & Light crews were called to fix power lines that had fallen in three locations near each other.

Shortly before 4 p.m., more than 5,000 residents in Broward County were without power because of the stormy weather, and nearly 900 were without power in Miami-Dade County.

Dozens of flights were also delayed at Miami International Airport and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.
