Metrorail shut down temporarily as police search for perp in Coral Gables

Police say man shoplifting at Nordstrom in Merrick Park

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Metrorail service was shut down temporarily Wednesday afternoon as police searched for a man who was shoplifting at a department store in Coral Gables.

A large police presence was seen in the area of Ponce De Leon Boulevard between Granada Boulevard and Riviera Drive just after 2 p.m.

Police later confirmed that they are looking for a white, Hispanic man who shoplifted at the Nordstrom department store in Merrick Park and was seen running south on the rails.

The theft was reported about 11:30 a.m. and the Metrorail was shut down about an hour later.

"He was last seen wearing denim jean shorts as well as a black T-shirt," said a Coral Gables police spokeswoman. "If anyone sees anyone fitting this description – it's possible he may have discarded his T-shirt or clothing because of the fact of the heavy rain we had earlier, and trying to disguise his identity."

A Metrorail representative said they were asked by authorities to cut power on the Metrorail while they searched for the culprit.

The Metrorail was shut down between University Station and the Douglas Road Station.

Public bus service was not affected.

Metrorail service resumed at 2:55 p.m.
