Man found dead inside home after North Miami Beach SWAT standoff

Woman found in driveway with gunshot wound to face

NORTH MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – A standoff that had a neighborhood on lockdown late Friday evening has come to an end.

After several hours of back and forth with law enforcement, the SWAT team stormed inside the house only to find a lone man dead.

Residents in the North Miami Beach neighborhood watched and waited as a crime scene investigation unfolded only steps from their front doors.

Hanna Depauoa has lived in this neighborhood her entire life.

"This never happens," Depauoa said. "This is not like our neighborhood at all. You just see this on TV. It's not normal."

Depauoa and her neighbors were forced to stay behind the crime scene tape after a man locked himself inside a house nearby. This went on for the entire evening. Several blocks along Northeast 180th Street and 19th Avenue were blocked off. No one was allowed in or out of their homes until the standoff was over.

"I went over to go ask a cop and they were like, just like, 'No, you have to leave,' but my cousin was there," Depauoa said. "I wanted to see if they were OK, you know?"

It all started when police got a call about 6:30 p.m.

When officers showed up, Major Kathy Katerman said, they found a woman waiting in the driveway with a gunshot wound to the face.

The woman was immediately taken to Aventura Hospital to get treated. Meanwhile, the man at the home barricaded himself inside.

Strong blasts coming from the house sounded like gunshots or mini-explosions, but police said no shots were fired during the standoff.

The SWAT team and hostage negotiators stepped in, using what are known as flash bangs to help lure the suspect out, but that didn't happen.

SWAT team members eventually forced their way in, only to find a man's body inside the home.

The woman remained in critical condition Saturday night.

Although the incident remains under investigation, it appears to be an attempted murder-suicide involving a husband and wife.
