911 dispatcher had sex with child, Palm Bay police say
Woman arrested after detectives called to investigate drug overdose
PALM BAY, Fla. – A Palm Bay police dispatcher has been relieved of duty and is now on medical watch after detectives charged her with having ongoing sexual relations with a child.
Amanda Chandler, 40, was charged with eight counts of sexual battery and five counts of lewd and lascivious conduct after Palm Bay detectives were called to investigate a drug overdose involving Chandler earlier this week.
"We responded to the hospital on Aug. 1 and learned there was an inappropriate relationship that she was having with an 11-year-old boy," said Yvonne Martinez, spokeswoman for the Palm Bay Police Department.
Chandler, a Palm Bay resident who joined the department as a 911 emergency dispatcher three years ago, was immediately suspended from the agency.
Efforts to remove her from her job are underway, Martinez said.
Several corrections officers and detectives were at Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne to serve the arrest warrant. Chandler will be turned over to a facility for further medical evaluation before being booked in the Brevard County Jail Complex.
Chandler had known the child – who would occasionally stay at her home with her family – since last year but police believe the sexual contact began in February.
Chandler's husband was shocked at the charges.
"She seemed like she liked to help people...this has torn my family apart, especially my son," said Steven Chandler, who has been married to Amanda Chandler for 19 years. The couple has two children, ages 10 and 8.
"Obviously, this is something that is very disturbing. It did not involve her job but it is a sad story," Martinez said. "You're talking about an 11-year-old that's going to be affected by this for the rest of his life."
Police are looking into whether there may be other victims.
Chandler was an avid supporter of local little league baseball sports.
