Key West commissioners vote to ease marijuana penalties

Police to give $100 citations at their discretion for those caught with 20 grams of marijuana or less

KEY WEST, Fla. – The Key West City Commission voted unanimously Tuesday to ease penalties for those caught with small amounts of marijuana.

Commissioner Mark Rossi proposed the new law, which would give police the option of issuing a $100 citation to anyone caught with 20 grams of marijuana or less. Police officers would still be allowed to arrest individuals caught with small amounts of marijuana at their discretion.

Similar ordinances were passed recently in Miami Beach and Miami-Dade County.

A final vote on the ordinance is scheduled for Sept. 1.
