DANIA BEACH, Fla. – Cellphone video captured the aftermath of a fatal shooting at a supermarket Monday night in Dania Beach.
Jeffrey Collie, 71, is accused of killing Ellyaher Lanza, 23. The U.S. Army veteran was being held without bond on a charge of second-degree murder.
The Labor Day shooting in front of Winn-Dixie, 308 E. Dania Beach Blvd., happened after Collie accused Lanza of damaging his red pickup truck. Lanza was walking toward the entrance of the Winn-Dixie with a friend when Collie approached him.
In the cellphone video, an unidentified man is heard shouting,"He didn't do nothing man! What's the (expletive) problem, man?"
Collie told deputies that Lanza grabbed his arm during a struggle and the gun accidentally went off. Deputies said the surveillance video contradicted Collie's claim.
The cellphone video shows a man identified as Collie standing over Lanza's body and what appears to be a handgun inside a holster. Collie has a concealed weapons permit.
Broward Sheriff's Office Deputy Laughten Hall and an unidentified security guard were at the scene. In the video, someone can be heard saying that the man on the ground is dead.
"Of course he's dead," the security guard said.
But seconds later, the video shows Lanza gasp for air. A bystander then shouted, "Oh my God! Call somebody!"
The video shows Hall detained Collie first, and then reached for his emergency kit and prepared to render cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Lanza was pronounced dead at Memorial Regional Hospital about 45 minutes later.
